This cowl was knit from a series of colorwork motifs inspired by traditional Māori weaving.

Kumara: sweet potato leaves. Though the leaves are edible, it was the root of the potato that was an
important staple food in Māori cuisine. It is associated with the Māori god Rongomātāne, the god of
peace. The sample shown in this pattern features this motif.
